Obviously Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff Weren't Going to Work Out and Here's Why
Who could have seen this divorce coming? Well, anyone reasonable, really.
After a few days of speculation, People Magazine has confirmed that Margaret Qualley is divorcing Jack Antonoff, just shy of their third wedding anniversary.
The internet discourse seems to suggest that most people saw it coming. I didn't really know these two, to be honest. But after reading the People article about their divorce, I saw a number of red flags that existed before their marriage that could have signaled this relationship was never going to work out.
Let’s discuss.
1. The Age Gap
She is 31, and he is 42. They’re at different stages in their lives and careers; plus, what on earth do they have in common? Speaking from experience, you do not have much in common with a man at that age, even in your early 30s.
2. Tight Timeline
Apparently, the two met in 2021, engaged in 2022, and then married in New Jersey in August 2023. Why the rush? I say 2 years is at least how long you should date someone before committing to a lifetime together. If you don’t date long enough, you haven’t properly tested your compatibility and whether you can remain compatible as you both change and grow together.
3. The Aspect of Vulnerability in Their Engagement
Jack shared that he asked Margaret to marry him while the two were living in Paris. Neither of them is native to Paris. Moving to a new city is a huge change, and it’s incredibly isolating. I would argue it’s a terrible time to get engaged. Marriage is a huge decision, and the choice to enter into it should be made when you’re settled and in the right state of mind, at least.
4. Unmet Fantasies
Jack apparently knew he wanted to marry Margaret the minute he saw her, and fantasized about their life together. This kind of thing is passed off as romantic; it’s not. Don’t project what you want onto people you don’t know - they probably won’t be able to meet the unspoken expectation you’ve put on them. Get to know them first and then fantasize from a place of reality.
5. He Is Known to be a Shitty Partner
He left his girlfriend of 6 years, Lena Dunham, shortly after she underwent a hysterectomy. What.
6. Margaret is Way Out of His League
She’s the daughter of a celebrity, beautiful, and a rising star. I’m not suggesting that dating out of your league is inherently a bad thing. But the reality is that many men cannot handle having a woman who's way out of their league. It fucks with their ego and self-esteem. And just by taking one look at Jack, I don’t see much confidence or self-esteem in that man. So, my personal feeling, this was also a part of it.
Regardless of whether someone could have seen it coming or not, divorce is still hard, and I wish the two of them well.
There are already rumors swirling that Margaret is dating a co-star, but who knows.
